and there to meet me is my Mama and Papa.

The shell in this painting is an abelone shell ("perlemoen skulp") - found in the seas along the western coast of southern Africa, but a nearly extinct species of shellfish... it takes at least twelve years for an abelone shell to grow to adult proportions, and it is widely poached, despite severe penalties for removing it from the sea. The shellfish itself is a delicacy and is believed to have aphrodisiac properties.  It is widely sought after in the Far Eastern Countries, where it fetches record prices on the black market.
